Professional profile
Dr Hector Chinoy is a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Consultant Rheumatologist. He runs a private Rheumatology clinic at the Bridgewater Hospital, Manchester, for both general and specialist conditions, usually on a Thursday/Friday evening. At Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, he looks after about 1,000 patients per year with a variety of musculoskeletal complaints, co-directs the biologics clinic, and a combined psoriatic arthritis-psoriasis clinic. He is also principal investigator on a number of clinical trials.
He is also employed by The University of Manchester, where he is actively involved with research and the education of medical students and doctors, and is Programme Director for the Clinical Rheumatology MSc Programme. Dr Chinoy has authored over 20 research articles in international peer-reviewed journals, has presented over 40 research abstracts in national and international conferences, and is considered to be a global expert in inflammatory myopathy.
Dr Chinoy firmly believes in the importance of clear, open communication with patients and sufferers of musculoskeletal conditions. He sees a wide range of rheumatic diseases at Salford Royal and closely works alongside a multidisciplinary team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses and podiatrists. Many rheumatic diseases cannot be cured, but accurate diagnosis and focused management/treatment can help significantly to improve pain, disability and quality of life.
On completing his medical degree at the University of Nottingham in 1996, Dr Chinoy carried out medical training in Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester. He trained in Rheumatology in the North West from 2001-2009. He completed an Arthritis Research UK Fellowship at The University of Manchester studying clinical and genetic associations in myositis, a condition which causes disabling symptoms due to inflammation of muscle, and was awarded a PhD in 2007. In 2009 he became a Consultant Rheumatologist and in February 2010 was awarded a Senior Clinical Lectureship in Rheumatology.
Research interests include the immunogenicity of biologic therapy, immunogenetic risk factors and how these correlate with novel serological biomarkers and clinical outcomes. He is co-chair of UKMYONET, a national consortium which fosters collaborative research in inflammatory myopathy. Dr Chinoy is a member of EUMYONET, a European collaborative consortium funded by the Association Française contre les Myopathies, and the International Myositis Genetics Consortium, MYOGEN. As part of EUMYONET, Dr Chinoy is also chair of euromyositis.eu, a web-based consortium which collects standardised clinical data in 8 countries.
