Professor Coulthard undertook general clinical training (Manchester and Sheffield), basic surgical training (Manchester, Carlisle. London), and higher surgical training in Academic Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Manchester). He has a special clinical interest in oral implantology and bone grafting surgery in addition to the control of pain and anxiety in surgery. Professor Coulthard also has an international research reputation in these fields.
