3D / 4D Scans

3D / 4D ScansA 4D scan gives you a unique opportunity to bond with your unborn baby. Using the latest GE Voluson ultrasound scanner, you can see what your baby looks like in 3D/4D. The scanner generates life like moving images of the baby in the womb, which are seen at the time of the scan. You may see your baby yawn, grimace or wave their hand, each baby is different.

All the sonographers at Bridgewater Hospital are experienced professionals who will use their scanning skills, together with knowledge of the equipment to bring you a special view into your baby's world.

When you visit for a 3D/4D scan you should allow up to an hour. You may bring up to 4 people to watch, besides the all important mum to be. You will all have an excellent view of the scan on a large wall mounted TV monitor.

Initially, we will show you a 2D scan of the baby, and describe clearly what you are looking at. We will sex the baby if you wish. We would never tell you the gender of the baby without your permission. We will measure your baby and assess the baby's wellbeing. (This scan is not a substitute for the 20 week anomaly scan which you will have had prior to this scan) We will move on to show you your baby in 4D imaging, paying particular attention to the baby's face as everyone is interested to see who they look like.

We will record the best scan images on to a CD for your computer & record it all on a DVD to watch at home on your television. Overall we will scan you for up to 20 minutes. The sonographer can help you choose the best images from the whole scan to print 4 images onto glossy photographic paper. 3D/4D scans can give astonishingly clear views of your unborn baby, but sometimes due to the baby's position, placental position, amount of water around the baby or the size of mum, we may not see the baby as well as we hoped. We may ask you to walk around and, or have a drink to encourage the baby to move into a position where we can get a better image a bit later on. Be reassured that the sonographers will use their expertise to get the best possible images on the day.

We recommend that 3D/4D scans are performed during the 26 - 32 week period, when more animated facial images can usually be seen. You do not need a full bladder when you come for this scan. It would be helpful if you could bring your hand held notes with you.

You take home a DVD, a CD rom with the images taken and 4 glossy photographs.

"Santosh seemed almost as excited about our baby as my boyfriend and I. I had got myself in a tizz, worrying I had got it all wrong and wasn’t really pregnant at all! When the baby came up on the screen, both Ben and I burst into tears and so did Santosh! She made it such a magical experience. We will never forget it. She explained everything and reassured us completely. I thought the 4D scan was going to be freaky but it was just amazing and to be able to bring home a dvd to show the grandparents is fantastic"
