Is Breast Reduction Right for You?

In most cases, breast reduction is not performed before a woman's breasts are fully developed. However, the procedure can be undergone at an earlier stage if large breasts are causing serious physical discomfort. Ideal candidates are those who are mature enough to fully understand the implications of the procedure and have realistic expectations of its results. Breast reduction is not recommended for women who are intending to breast-feed.

Your Breast Reduction Consultation

During your free breast reduction consultation with your surgeon, you are encouraged to discuss the goals and expectations you have for your surgery. Your breast reduction consultation will take place with an experienced patient coordinator and cosmetic nurse. We will provide you with all the information necessary to enable you to make an informed decision, and you will always have the opportunity to discuss detailed aspects of your breast reduction operation with your surgeon. Our surgeons are General Medical Council (GMC) registered, and are qualified members of affiliated bodies and societies. You may be shown a range of before and after photographs of patients with similar breasts who have undergone treatment, and your surgeon will explain the treatment and the results you can expect to see.

The Breast Reduction Procedure

The breast reduction procedure involves the removal of fatty tissue in the breast, in addition to the removal of excess skin and glandular tissue. By removing these elements, the breasts are pulled tighter - which results in lighter, smaller and firmer breasts. Breast reduction surgery is typically performed under a general anaesthetic.

Recovery from Breast Reduction

The recovery time for each patient following their breast reduction varies depending on the amount of tissue removed, among other factors. Breast reduction patients generally require ten days off work and are not advised to resume any heavy lifting or strenuous physical activity for a few weeks following surgery. Patients will be able to observe the results of their breast reduction as the swelling goes down.
