Eyelid Cyst Removal

An eyelid cyst, called a chalazion, is a painless lump or swelling on either the upper or lower eyelid. It is caused by a blockage in one of the glands that supplies fluid to lubricate the edge of the eyelid.

Small eyelid cysts usually clear up on their own. However, if a cyst is excessively large, uncomfortable or persistent, it may need to be surgically removed.

Eyelid cysts are usually removed by having a minor operation performed by an ophthalmologist under local anaesthesia. The procedure normally takes about 20 minutes and is routinely performed as a day case.
