Gynaecology

Consultant Gynaecologists at the Bridgewater Hospital offer a wide range of diagnostic treatments and procedures for women of all ages. Gynaecologists address concerns and issues involving the female reproductive system, which may be caused by disease, inherited, or the result of pregnancy and/or childbirth. As a result of advances in medical technology, women no longer have to grin and bear it; whether through the latest drugs or minimally invasive surgical techniques you can live the life you want - exercising, socialising, and just having fun - today!

Our specialists are able to help women affected by a wide range of symptoms.

Painful Periods

Many women experience pain or discomfort when they have their periods, which is caused by the natural contractions in the muscles of the uterus (womb). Often these can be allayed by painkillers, daily exercise, and a healthy diet.

For some women, however, pain is more problematic and affects both work and home life. If this is the case, you may wish to see a specialist. He or she will perform a full examination, which may include an ultrasound scan or laparoscopy. A detailed treatment plan can then be created to help target and relieve your symptoms.

Irregular or Infrequent Periods

Periods are often light or widely spaced, both when a young woman starts having periods and when she is nearing menopause. However, many women who do not fall into these categories also experience periods occurring just once or twice every six months. It would be unusual for there to be a serious underlying problem, but sometimes it can be useful to meet with a specialist for an explanation and reassurance.

The most common cause of infrequent periods is a condition called polycystic ovaries, and a diagnosis can be made using a conjunction of blood tests and ultrasound scans.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis affects one in three women seeking specialist gynaecological help, and occurs when some of the cells from the lining of the womb move to other parts of the pelvis, such as the bladder or intestines. Symptoms may include heavy and painful periods, pain during sex, or pain in the lower pelvis between periods.

Endometriosis is most accurately diagnosed with a laparascopy, and treatment depends on the severity of the symptoms.

Often women choose to live with minor symptoms because they are not dangerous or life-threatening, but symptoms tend to worsen over time. Minimal access surgery, often referred to as laparoscopic or keyhole surgery, is now being used for an increasing number of gynaecological procedures including hysterectomies. Treatments available today can revolutionise lives.

Sterilisation can now be carried out using the very latest "walk in, walk out" technique. This technique does not require a general anaesthetic, and involves no incisions and no scars.
